Paula Polite N.Y is a boutique on Frederick Douglass Boulevard in Harlem. The counter holds the things that finish an outfit rather than form it: a stack of rings, a scarf knotted at the handle of a bag, a wide band that solves a hair day, a pair of drops that carry an otherwise plain evening.
Almost everything here costs less than lunch, and that is the point. Costume jewelry is a good thing to buy with clear eyes — worn often, replaced when it dulls, and never paid for at solid-gold prices. So we call plating plating. Nothing on this site is solid gold, and every listing says exactly what it is.
The pieces are also priced to be bought in multiples, because that is how they are worn. Rings stack three at a time, bangles sit together, scarves come in sets so one purchase covers a head wrap, a neck tie and a bag handle.

- Care: Put jewelry on last, take it off before showering or swimming, and wipe it dry before storing. Hand wash satin-feel scarves in cool water.
