Caring for Costume Jewelry So It Lasts a Season Longer
Costume jewelry is designed to be affordable rather than permanent, but most pieces are retired long before they had to be. Three habits and a small amount of care roughly double how long a plated piece looks new.
Last on, first off
Put jewelry on after perfume, hairspray, lotion and sunscreen, and take it off before removing makeup or washing. Alcohol in fragrance and the oils in lotion are both hard on thin plating.
This single habit is the highest-value thing in this article. Almost all early dulling on plated pieces is chemical rather than mechanical.
Keep a small dish by the sink so removing them is easier than leaving them on.
Water: which kinds matter
Plain water is not the main problem. Chlorinated pool water, salt water, hot soapy water and hard water with a high mineral content all are, and all leave residues that accelerate tarnish at any point the plating is thin.
Remove jewelry before swimming, showering and washing up. A ring worn while washing dishes is exposed to hot water, detergent and abrasion simultaneously.
If a piece does get wet, dry it fully — including inside settings — before storing.
Cleaning without stripping the finish
Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each wear. That removes skin oils before they have time to react, and for most pieces it is all the cleaning that is ever needed.
For heavier soiling, a barely damp cloth and immediate drying. Do not use jewelry dips, ultrasonic cleaners or polishing compounds on plated pieces: they are designed to remove a surface layer, and on plated jewelry that layer is the gold.
Never use toothpaste or baking soda, both of which are abrasive.
Storage that prevents scratching
Store pieces separately. Loose in a dish, every item abrades every other item, and chains tangle into knots that damage links when pulled apart.
Soft pouches, a compartmented box or even a pill organiser for small pieces all work. The principle is one item, one space.
Keep storage out of the bathroom. Humidity is the enemy of any base metal, and a bathroom shelf is the worst location in the home.
Stones, resin and pearls
Natural stone beads and healing stone drops vary in hardness and some are porous. Avoid soaking them and avoid any cleaning solution, which can be absorbed and change the colour.
Acrylic and resin pieces scratch easily and are damaged by solvents including nail varnish remover and some perfumes.
Imitation pearls have a thin coating that is removed by friction and by acid, including perspiration. Wipe after every wear.
Elastic, leather and cord
Elastic-strung bracelets should be rolled on rather than stretched over the hand, which is what breaks them. Elastic degrades with heat, lotion and time regardless.
Leather wraps should be kept dry; wet leather stretches and then dries stiff and cracked. Keep them out of direct sun, which fades and hardens the surface.
Cotton and waxed cord will fray at knots over time and can usually be trimmed and re-sealed with a touch of clear glue.
When plating wears through
Once the base metal shows, the piece cannot be restored at home. Replating is possible professionally and almost never economical for costume jewelry.
If you have a nickel sensitivity, a worn-through piece is also the point at which it may start causing a reaction, and it should be retired rather than tolerated.
That is the intended life cycle of this category: wear it often, look after it, replace it when it is done.
A thirty-second routine
Put it on last. Take it off before water. Wipe it with a cloth. Put it in its own space. That is the whole routine and it takes half a minute a day.
Do that and a stack of gold-tone rings stays bright for a year or more rather than a few months.
